Coaching Staff
Wayne Westenberg
Assistant Coach
Joining the Northwestern coaching staff in 2006, Westenberg begins his sixth season as an assistant for the Red Raiders. Prior to joining the Northwestern staff, Westenberg coached for 22 years at Sanborn and Unity Christian High School, compiling a 593-108-33 overall record. He led Unity to 10 state tournaments, winning five state championships, and coached several players who are now in the Iowa High School Hall of Fame. Westenberg earned Iowa State Coach of the Year five times and in 1999 was named National High School Coach of the Year. In 2007, Westenberg was inducted into the Iowa Girls’ Coaches Association Volleyball Hall of Fame.
“I hope the players in NWC’s program continue growing in their realization that all areas of life are opportunities to advance the kingdom of Christ,” Westenberg said. “Coaching at Northwestern is a tremendous privilege because of the chance to work with athletes who have such a high level of character.”
Westenberg, a Northwestern alum, earned his Ed.D. degree from the University of South Dakota. He is currently an associate professor of mathematics at Northwestern, a role he has served for 10 years. Westenberg and his wife, Diane, who also works at Northwestern, have four children and nine grandchildren.
Leeanne McMillen
Assistant Coach
Coach McMillen begins her third season on the Raiders’ coaching staff after spending the previous 21 years as the head of the MOC-Floyd Valley High School volleyball program. She oversees the junior varsity squad along with assisting with the varsity.
McMillen brings 27 years of high school volleyball coaching experience, six with George High School and 21 with the Dutch. She accumulated an impressive 519-247-25 record during her career and guided her teams to the state tournament twice (1986, 1988). McMillen led MOC-Floyd Valley to nine conference championships, including her last two years at the helm. She also served as the IGCA All-Star volleyball coach in 1986 and 2000.
“I feel very privileged to have the opportunity to work with the excellent volleyball staff here at NWC.
My goal has always been to help develop young ladies into successful young adults,” states McMillen. “I want to help these young women be the best they can become.”
McMillen taught physical education at Orange City Elementary for 21 years. Her husband, Terry, is in promotional sales with Keith Merrick Inc. and a Siouxland high school basketball official. They have two daughters—Dawn, married to Ted, and Megan, married to Josh—and five grandchildren.
Rochell Sapp
Assistant Coach
Sapp returns to the Raider coaching staff after a two-year absence and will be assisting both the varsity and junior varsity squads. She previously spent two seasons (2007-08) as the coach of the Northwestern junior varsity.
Sapp coached four years at the high school level, one season at Ontario Christian (Calif.) before a two-year stint at Rock Valley Community High School followed by one year at Unity Christian.
Sapp is a graduate of Dordt College, where she played two years for the Defenders. She then served as the student assistant coach her final two seasons.
“I enjoyed my previous coaching experience with the Red Raiders. It is a very successful program with outstanding coaches,” commented Sapp. “It is my goal to show our players that their relationships with each other and with Christ are the things they will take with them the rest of their lives.”
Sapp is the manager at the Orange City Fitness Center and also is the director of the Orange City pool. Her husband, John, is employed at Agrapur Foods in Hull, Iowa. They have two children, Kaedyn & Carter, and are expecting their third child later this year.
